About Seine-Maritime Coastal Natural Area

Seine-Maritime Coastal Natural Area

The Seine-Maritime Coastal Natural Area stretches along the northern coast of Normandy, France, characterized by its iconic towering chalk cliffs, pebble beaches, and stretches of dunes and marshes. It includes part of the Alabaster Coast (Côte d'Albâtre), known for its striking white cliffs that drop vertically into the English Channel. This landscape has been shaped by centuries of marine erosion and features unique geological formations such as sea stacks, caves, and arches. The area supports a variety of ecological zones, from coastal heathlands to wetland bird sanctuaries, making it a vital stopover for migratory birds and home to numerous rare plant species. Historically, the coast has significant cultural landmarks including the seaside town of Étretat, famous for its natural cliff arches and the needle-like rock formation called L'Aiguille. Outdoor recreation opportunities abound, including scenic hiking trails along cliff tops, guided boat tours to explore sea caves, and beachcombing for fossilized remains. Visitors often enjoy panoramic views of the Channel and the quaint ports and seaside resorts dotted along the shoreline. The region is popular for its blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage, offering visitors a chance to experience traditional Norman coastal life alongside breathtaking natural scenery.
